Fever in Children: What Should Parents
Know?
Fever is one of the most common reasons parents seek medical advice. While fever is often
part of the body's response to infection, the child's age, symptoms, behaviour, and overall
condition are important.
What Is Fever?
Parents should also observe:
Is the child alert and responsive?
Is the child drinking fluids?
Is the child passing urine normally?
Is the child breathing comfortably?
Is the child unusually sleepy or difficult to wake?
Is there persistent vomiting?
Is there a rash or seizure?
When Should You Seek Medical Attention?
Prompt medical assessment is particularly important when a child has difficulty breathing,
persistent vomiting, a seizure, unusual drowsiness, severe dehydration, a concerning rash,
severe pain, or significant deterioration.
Very young infants with fever should be assessed promptly by a healthcare professional.
Avoid Unnecessary Self-Medication
Do not give children medicines simply because an adult in the family uses them.
Medication choice and dose depend on factors such as age and weight. Always follow
appropriate medical advice.
Keep the Child Comfortable
Encourage appropriate fluids and allow the child to rest. Avoid excessive wrapping or cooling
methods that make the child uncomfortable.
Trust Your Instincts
Parents often notice when their child's behaviour is different from normal. If you are worried
about your child's condition, it is reasonable to seek medical advice.
