Recognising the Early Warning Signs of
Stroke
A stroke can happen when blood flow to part of the brain is interrupted or when bleeding occurs
in the brain.
Because brain cells can be damaged rapidly, recognising the warning signs and seeking
emergency care quickly is extremely important.
Remember FAST
F – Face :
Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
A – Arms
Ask them to raise both arms. Is one arm weak or drifting downward?
S – Speech
Is their speech slurred, unclear, or difficult to understand?
T – Time
If these symptoms appear suddenly, seek emergency medical care immediately.
Other Warning Signs
Stroke may also cause:
Sudden vision problems
Sudden dizziness or difficulty walking
Loss of balance or coordination
Sudden severe headache
Sudden confusion
Numbness or weakness
Why Time Matters
Stroke is a medical emergency. Delaying treatment may reduce the available treatment options
and increase the risk of long-term disability.
Do not wait to see whether symptoms disappear.
What About Symptoms That Go Away?
Even if symptoms disappear after a short period, medical assessment is important. Temporary
neurological symptoms can still be a warning of a future stroke.
Can Stroke Be Prevented?
Not every stroke can be prevented, but controlling risk factors can reduce risk.
Important measures include managing:
High blood pressure
Diabetes
High cholesterol
Smoking
Excess alcohol consumption
Heart rhythm disorders
Obesity and physical inactivity
CCMK Memorial Hospital provides neurological services and emergency care for patients
requiring urgent medical assessment.
If you suspect a stroke, do not wait. Seek emergency medical care immediately.
